Jawai Bandh (जवाई बान्ध) is a dam built across the Jawairiver, a tributary of Luni river. With the same name, a village also situated near to the dam and a railway station on Ajmer-Ahmendabad route. It comes under Sumerpur Tehsil of Pali district in Rajasthan.
The dam is situated near Sumerpur town in Pali Districtof Rajasthan state in India. The dam was built by Maharaja Umaid Singh of Jodhpur. the work started on 12 May 1946 and it got completed in 1957. Total expenditure was Rupees 2 crore 7 Lakhs. This village covers an area of 500 km². This is the biggest dam in the western Rajasthan. The dam has capacity of 7887.5 million cubic feet and covers an area of 102,315 acres (414.05 km2) of cultivable command area.[2] Its height is about 61.25 feet (18.67 m). Sei dam and Kalibor dam are the feeder dams of the Jawai dam. Besides being a Winter paradise for migratory birds, it is the main water supply source for Jodhpur city and parts of Pali district. If there is sufficient water in the dam, then some villages of Jalore district and Pali district get water for irrigation from the Jawai dam, which was the main aim in making this dam. Being located at the embankment, Jawai gives you an amazing view of the river. The rocky granite Hills of Jawai were shaped by lava billions of years ago and now the natural caves and rock shelters of Jawai Hills are home to leopards and Indian striped hyena. Adding to its beauty are the granite rocks and hills which surrounds the whole area. Jawai is also known for its sanctuaries for leopards, birds, and crocodiles. It is also called the winter paradise for migratory birds with more than 100 species frequenting every year. Along with a great variety of birds, Jawai is home to panthers, hyenas, chinkaras, nilgai, bears, and wolves as well. However, it is chiefly known for its human-friendly leopards. The unique behavior of Jawai leopards will change the opinion about the big cat, that leopards are solitary animals. The leopards of Jawai reveals leopard behavior like never before, Leopards of Jawai hills where roam wild and free and also living peacefully with humans. “The relaxed nature of these animals in proximity with human culture is indeed unique; I’ve not known anything like it. It’s been like this for many years, according to local lore. Leopard attacks on humans are unheard of here and the villagers too are unfazed by the presence of the big cats in their daily life,” . “Leopards are worshipped as demigods here and the villagers will not object even if a calf, goat or dog is killed by a leopard. Unlike in other parts of India, the leopards here don’t live in trees; they take refuge in the caves in the Aravalli range.’’
